Finding the right contractor for your roof repair or replacement project can be quite challenging. While there are many reputable roofers, there are also the shady ones who lie purposefully to earn your business. Know some of the lies they may tell their customers below.
1. “Sign this pre-contract so we can get you a new roof through insurance.”
If your roof suffered extensive damage following a storm, a reputable roofing contractor can perform an inspection and work with your insurance company on your behalf without the need to sign anything. Make sure you only sign the final contract indicating the dollar amount and specific scope of work.
2. “Our crew is composed of qualified roofers.”
A typical roofing crew will only have at least two actual roofers and mostly general laborers. To avoid delays and missteps during the roofing process, make sure the contractor you hire has a crew filled with qualified roofers and installers who are certified to work on specific brands of roofing materials and components.
3. “I’m doing work in the neighborhood and noticed damage on your roof.”
If someone knocks on your door and says something similar to this statement, be cautious. They may be doing work in your area, but consider verifying the statement by asking where or for whom. A roofing contractor should pull up beside your house on a company-marked truck, looks decent and professional, and has a business card. To be sure, look up the company name on the internet to see if they are legitimate. Ideally, it’d be better to call the contractor yourself for an inspection.
4. “We use top-notch roofing products.”
Some roofers supplement the appropriate materials and components for your roof repair or replacement with substandard ones. See to it that the estimate they provide you includes a list of each material to be used for the project, complete with the quantity and brand.
