How to Mitigate Roof Damage During Winter

As the winter season approaches, it’s important to take preemptive measures in keeping your home healthy and secure, especially your roofing system. Winter can bring heavy snowfall, which may lead to severe roof damage. To help you protect your roof from the cold season, be sure to read this article from LePage and Sons Roofing LLC. In this post, we will explain how you can mitigate roof damage in time for winter.

Schedule Regular Maintenance

The best way to reduce the possibility of roof damage during the winter is to schedule regular maintenance. Professional roofers will be able to spot any underlying issues that may compromise the integrity of your home during the winter season, such as leaks. They can then perform the necessary roof repair or replacement services. For best results, be sure to have your roof examined at least twice a year, including once before winter.

Clean and Repair Gutters

The purpose of your gutters is to collect water and deposit it away from your home’s foundation. Clogged gutters can lead to severe roof damage. If not cleaned regularly, mold and mildew can form in your gutters and roof, which can be harmful to your health. Additionally, when temperatures drop significantly, standing water can turn to ice, creating dangerous icicles and ice dams. To prevent this, have your gutters cleaned or repaired as needed.

Prevent Attic Condensation

Another roofing issue you have to look out for is attic condensation, which is caused by improper ventilation. With attic condensation, wood may eventually rot and compromise your roof from the inside out. As such, your roofing contractor would suggest having your roof vented properly. Venting allows warm air to escape the house rather than building up in the attic and causing humidity. You may want to plug any insulation leaks on your attic floor or check appliances, plumbing and dehumidifiers that may not be functioning efficiently.

Remove Debris on Roof

During the winter season, it’s important to keep your roof clear of any debris. Any litter on the roof of your home can pose a real danger. Small objects tossed around by the wind can crack or dislodge shingles. Not to mention, stacks of wet leaves can lead to mold. At the end of the fall season, you should remove any debris on your roof for better protection in time for winter. When the snow begins to fall, it’s best to get rid of any additional weight as it may hurt your roof’s structure.

By following these tips, your roofing system will be able to withstand the elements this winter. For more inquiries about your roofing needs, get in touch with us at LePage and Sons Roofing LLC.
