What Are Roof Boots?

Roof boots may not be as talked about as other parts of the roof, but they are nevertheless a crucial part of every roofing system. In today’s post, local roofing company LePage and Sons Roofing LLC discusses the importance of roof boots.

What Are Roof Boots For?

A roof boot is a type of flashing that protects the base of vent pipes, flues and other protrusions coming out of your roof. Since these protrusions penetrate the roofing place, their bases are vulnerable to moisture infiltration. Unlike most other types of flashing, roof boots can be made of rubber or plastic, in addition to metals like copper. In fact, most new roof boots are made of neoprene, a type of rubber that’s also used for making cable jackets, gasoline hoses, and wetsuits.

Life Span

Roof boots typically last for 10 years. Considering that an asphalt shingle roof has an expected life span of 20 to 30 years, you can expect a roof boot replacement at least once. Roof boots have bases that are offset at an angle, which helps make sure that they sit flush on the rooftop while protrusions remain vertical. We recommend having roof boots replaced by a trusted “roofer near me” not just because it yields better results, but also because most roofing manufacturers consider DIY repairs as a reason to void roofing warranties.

Types of Roof Boots

As discussed above, neoprene is the most commonly-used material for making roof boots. But it is not the only option — copper roof boots are more durable and aesthetically pleasing, especially if you have copper gutters and decorative pieces to match.

You may also find roof boots made of lead. While they’re durable and in fact are still used in some areas, they’re toxic to humans and animals. The lead in these roof boots can also pollute the rainwater runoff, and may even make its way into your home in case of leaks. A good roofer will offer safer options like the ones we described above.
