Why Are Your Shingles Curling?

Curling shingles are not only unsightly, but they are also an indication that things are going badly for your roofing structure. If you see curling shingles on your roof, it is probably a good idea to call your contractor ASAP. Left unattended, curling shingles can pave the way for roof leaks and costly damage.

But why are your shingles curling in the first place? A roof repair expert reveals the possible reasons here.

Poor Ventilation in the Attic

Hot, moist air naturally rises from the living areas of your home into the attic. If the attic is sufficiently ventilated, the excess moisture in the air will be able to escape. If not, the moisture will get trapped in the decking, which will cause mold to grow and shingles to curl as a result.

Improperly Installed Shingles

Another all-too-common reason for shingle curling is the use of insufficient nails per shingle or the incorrect placement of the nails. If there are not enough nails holding the shingles or the nails are set in the incorrect location, it is likely that the nail will work itself out over time, leaving the shingle loose and therefore allowing it to curl. To avoid this issue, work with a reputable roofing contractor that specializes in installing the type of roofing you’ve chosen.

Old Age

If the shingles on your roof are curling but there seems to be no problem with the rest of the roofing structure, it might mean that your roof is simply too old. If your asphalt shingle roof was installed more than 15 years ago, it is time to add roof replacement to your to-do list soon.
