Why Is Proper Attic Ventilation So Important?

Your attic—the space found directly underneath your pitched roof—is more than a dedicated storage room. It is an essential part of the entire roofing system and needs to be cared for to make sure the rest of the interior space remains comfortable year-round. In this post, a premier solar roof company discusses why proper attic ventilation is important and how it keeps your energy costs down.

Why Balanced Ventilation Matters

Attic ventilation is the system that lets cool, fresh air into the attic and allows moist, stale air to escape. Sufficient airflow keeps the attic space at a uniform temperature and humidity level no matter the season. Keep in mind, however, that in order for attic ventilation to function effectively, the placement of ventilation should promote a balanced intake and exhaust system. The intake vent should be placed near the bottom of the attic at the eaves and the exhaust should be placed at the peak of the attic.

When intake and exhaust allow for the same amount of airflow, a push-pull effect is created around your roof, and only then that balanced ventilation is achieved, says a trusted roofing company. Without proper exhaust, moisture-filled air will not be able to run off; and without proper intake, air will only circulate across the upper portion of the room, leaving still air at the bottom of the attic.

How Attic Ventilation Helps Save You Money

If your attic is poorly ventilated, warm air will remain trapped inside and cause a series of moisture-related damage like mold and rot. This unventilated air can also flow back into the living space below, forcing your air conditioner, electric fans, and other appliances to work harder in order to attain the desired indoor temperature. In an average-sized home, cooling accounts for about 6% of total utility costs, and without proper ventilation, this can drive up your expected expenses even more. A properly ventilated attic, however, will allow hot air to escape rather than wreak havoc on the rest of your home.
